Week 35- Skittles Math, Soared Awards, MMS, & Field Day Celebration

Wow! This was a busy week! In math, we learned about mean, median, mode, and range. We made cootie catches but I forgot to take a picture. We wrote mean, median, mode and range on the outside. Then the kids rolled dice to create a set of data inside each.

Then we did a fun activity with Skittles. I purchased the Mean, Median, Mode, & Range bundle from Teaching with a Mountain View.  The kids loved the skittles activity. I gave each of them a cup of Skittles and they calculated the numbers based on their cup.

Then they partnered with someone else and did the same thing. Finally, they combined those groups to make a larger group and did it again. 

I loved this because it was lots of practice without just doing a worksheet! My new hashtag is #morefunthanaworksheet. 

We also had some of our atom art on display for the STEAM show at our school this week before the PTA meeting. 

Have you see the Together We Soared Awards by Deb Hanson? When I saw this I loved it and couldn't wait to use it with my class. 

I randomly assigned each student a classmate to write about. They were able to choose the type of award they were giving and then they had to write a paragraph to tell about what the award is and why they are giving it to that person. 

Next week I plan to let the kids share the awards they gave to their classmates. As I read through these I almost started to cry. I am so glad to see that my speeches about us being a family have really connected with my students. 

Each one of these is so thought out and I'm so proud!

We also took a trip to the middle school for my students to see what they are going to be a part of next year. 

I always love going because I get to see my former students! I sure do miss these sweet kids!

The end of our week was wrapped up with a celebration and field day. 

We celebrated the fact that our school was awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Lighthouse Award and the Leader in Me Lighthouse Award. 

Field day was full of fun relay races and water fun.

Week 28- Field trip, Fun Run, & Respiratory System

We finally had a full week of school with no delays and no weather days! Wow, it was great to finally be back on schedule and we filled the week with fun.

Monday started with the Fun Run to raise money for new technology for our school. 

The students collected pledges for laps run. We all had fun during the fun run. We had to do it inside because of our weather but it was still great. 

We also wrapped up our unit on the respiratory system. The kids did an experiment with BTB and water. They blew up a balloon and used a straw to force the air in the balloon into the water. 

Since the water had BTB in it, it turned yellow when the carbon dioxide was forced into the water.

We ended the week with a field trip to see our local high school put on the play Cinderella. We go every year and we're never disappointed. 

It was fun for all of us! We stopped and had CiCi's pizza for lunch and then returned to school.

Week 26- Chemistry, Field Trips, & Video Announcements

This week we did a few science experiments for our chemistry unit. The students had to observe the properties of 6 white powders. Then they added water and observed what happened. 

On the next day they added vinegar to those same powders. 

We'll test a few more liquids with the powders and at the end they will use the data they have collected to determine a mix of mystery powders. 

Teachers, if you ever do science experiments in your classroom you have to get these lab team roles! They are free on TpT and I love using them. Each student gets a card to assign their task for the experiment. It is a great way to keep everyone on task and involved.

Friday we went to the Civic Center to see Sparkman High School's play, The Wizard of Oz.

After the play we went to CiCi's pizza for lunch. 

I was sad I didn't get to go bowling with my students on Tuesday. I had to go to a meeting at central office for the Technology Integration Mentors. While there I won a new Sony HD video camera. So this week I tried something new! Check out our video announcements for the week! 

Thanks to this group of students for hanging out with me for a little while after school to get our first video done after the field trip.
