Week 27- Math Coach & Blowing Bubbles
Mrs. James, our math coach, came in this week to help us practice word problems! We also played a game using a line plot and fractions.
There were pizza cards and students took turns drawing cards and plotting the cards on a number line.
When time was up they added to see who had "sold" the most pizzas.
I used pentominoes and the students calculated perimeter and area for each.
We also pulled out the Cheez Its to practice area and perimeter.
Last week we learned about symmetry and I took pictures of the kids. I cut them in half and had them draw the other side. Here are just a few of the pictures we hung in the hallway this week.
At the end of the week we started writing how to papers. The topic is how to blow a bubble. We had a few classmates who don't know how to blow a bubble. We wrote step by step directions and as the kids read theirs aloud to the class they figured out where more details needed to be added.
STUDENTS: We have one more week until Spring Break. What are your plans for your week off?

Week 26- Fun Run & Grease
This week we experimented some with physical and chemical changes. We put some steel wool in vials of different liquids to see what happened.
We also looked inside a HotHands!
Blowing bubbles in a pie pan of bubbles was fun but also helped the students see how physical changes work. After we stopped blowing bubbles and left the pan alone it went back to what it was before we started blowing our bubbles.
Can you see the vials Ananda is holding? That is what happens when you put steel wool inside water, vinegar, and a vinegar/Clorox solution. Ew!
Thursday afternoon was our fun run. We raised money for our school by running around the track. Our team name was "Mad Scientists."
We also went to the Civic Center Friday to see Sparkman High School's drama club performance of Grease. They did a great job and I got to see a few of my former students.
STUDENTS: What was your favorite part of the week? Did you like the experiments, the fun run, the play? Why?

Week 25- Sweet Tart Chemistry & Geometry
This week we did an experiments with solutions. The kids were able to use 6 different liquids to try to dissolve Sweet Tarts. They used antifreeze, silver cleaner, Pepsi, lemonade, Kool Aid, and salt water. We were all surprised with the results.
The kids put 2 Sweet Tarts in each liquid and we checked them over a few days to see which dissolved first, second, etc..
These are the cups right after putting the Sweet Tarts in liquid.
And here are the cups after the experiment was finished. I put the cups in the same order so you can see the difference. The antifreeze still had solid Sweet Tarts in the bottom.
We have been studying geometry and made several flip books and interactive pages in our notebook this week.
Check out the Interactive Math Journal resource on Teachers Pay Teachers. This is an amazing resource if you use interactive notebooks in your classroom. The kids love putting these pages together and they learn a lot!
STUDENTS: This week we will be going to see Grease! Are you excited about the field trip? How will you use the habits on the field trip?
