Daily Data

Summer is here and I'm already trying to find something to do. Monday was a holiday and Tuesday was our last teacher work day. I haven't done a lot this week but I did make a file to add to Teacher Pay Teachers. I've had a few people ask about my Daily Data board that I do with my students.

I purchased sorting circles from EAI. I teach two math classes so I picked two different colors of push pins. I picked them up in the Dollar Spot at Target last year. Each class has their own colors and the buckets on the left side of the board hold those pins.

Each week I post a different question and the students use a pin to record their response on the venn diagram. One year I used number circles but with the number of students I have this year I found that the push pins worked better.

In their math journal, the students record the question and draw the venn diagram with the responses. Then we use that data to create graphs, observe trends, and make inferences. Want to check out the file? Take a look in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store.

Week 4- Energy Fun, Math Board, Daily Data, & Eating Bugs

This week I taught my class 2 more Wordtoons. They learned how to draw a fish from the word fish. They also drew a UFO from the word UFO. Take a look at some of their work.

This week I also taught the kids several new math games and let them play with them. Each person got to choose one of the games I taught to test.

Qwirkle- I only found two mistakes and that's pretty good for the first time with this game. I think this one is a little more challenging.

Can you tell I like games from Mindware? The kids loved them as well. So I picked a few students to use a new app on my iPad and create a Gami to explain which games they liked the best. Check out a few of our new Gamis! Like the app and want to use it with your students? It is called Tellagami.

This week during Morning Meeting I shared this book and we talked about some of the insects people eat.

Then I pulled out the crick-ettes and most of my students ate one.

Some of them thought there were pretty good.

Others were completely grossed out!

I've had a few people asking about my Math Synergy board so I thought I'd post a few pictures of what we've done since school started. You can see the number of the day, which was 14 in this picture.

The kids take the number and draw as many arrays that they can with 14 tiles. This helps them to determine if the number is prime or composite.

I also added this chart for today's number. We write the number as a fraction, equivalent fractions, decimal, percent, and ratios. We have a part to whole and part to part ratio.

We also complete our Daily Data notebook on Thursday. Throughout the week the kids get to vote to answer a question. This week the question was "What is your favorite kind of M&M?" Peanut or plain

The students write the following things in their composition notebook for daily data:
question of the week
draw the venn diagram with totals
draw a bar graph
I1 & I2- Write 2 inferences about the data from the graph.
Who cares? Write 2 people who would care about this data and explain why.

Untitled
Later I'll add a few more things but that's all we do right now.

We wrapped up the week with an experiment to explore potential and kinetic energy. Students used a tape measure to measure the bounce height of a bouncy ball when dropped from different heights.

Then they completed the chart with the heights from their groups, average bounce heights for each, and a graph of the data.

Students mentioned they thought this was math. We talked about the fact that you use math in science a lot.

Untitled

STUDENTS: Create a question for our daily data board. What would you like me to ask and what would the two choices be?

Week 2: Saving Fred

I have been doing morning meeting and closing circles with my students this year. I teach two different classes. I love doing this to build a sense of community. I found this post about organizing the materials needed for morning meeting so I decided to make my own. I used my Cricut to cut the letters for the front of the bucket.

Inside I have a sharing sign up sheet, my resource books, index cards, duct tape, and a few of my noise makers.

Untitled

I have also been using the iPad app called Music Cues for morning meeting and closing circles. When students hear the song Walking on Sunshine (Morning Meeting) or Final Countdown (Closing Circles) they know it is time to begin greeting their classmates. When the music stops and the chime rings they form a circle for sharing and a group activity.

Both of my science classes saved Fred this week! Check out all the supplies my parents sent in! They rock!

Here is the story about Fred: Fred (gummy worm) loves to go out on his boat (cup). He is out on the water (desk) every day. But Fred can't swim so he must wear his life jacket (gummy Life Saver) every time he goes out. One day Fred went out on the boat on his own and forgot his life jacket. His boat flipped over and the life jacked was stuck under the boat. If Fred touches the water he will die because he can't swim. The students must find a way to get the life jacket out from under the boat and around Fred so he can swim to safety. Here is the catch... students can't use their hands to touch anything. Each student gets 2 paperclips.

It was great to see the students working together to problem solve. If Fred hit the desk they had to set everything back and start over.

This week our daily data question was about their favorite subject: science or math (the 2 subjects I teach them). Students used push pins to cast their vote. At the end of the week we recorded this venn diagram in our notebook and made a bar graph to display the results. Students then made 2 inferences about the graph we created and answered the question "Who cares?" One student said people who created apps might care because they would sell more science apps than math apps.
