Our Last Days Together

I can't believe the school year is over! Today was our last day. We had a busy week this week. One of my former students, Megan, came to see me and talk to the kids about middle school.

We had some fun with math as well. We had a 24 tournament, with the help of Mrs. James.

Have you ever played 24? It is a lot of fun. There are 4 numbers on the card and students can add, subtract, multiply, and divide the numbers to reach 24. All numbers on the card must be used.

We also had 5th grade graduation this week. The kids were all dressed up and looked so nice!

Here is our class in the gym right before the ceremony.

Of course, I had to get a picture made with our principal, Dr. Davis.

At the end of the final day we had the 5th Grade Final Walk. All the students in the school stand in the hallway and cheer for our 5th grade students. Once they leave us they go to middle school so most of them won't be back.

Parents are invited to join us and meet us outside on the playground at the end of the walk.

I will take a little break from blogging for a week or so but I plan to continue sharing ideas throughout the summer for all my teacher followers. I hope everyone has a safe and restful summer!

Week 33- State Testing

This week we had ARMT testing. Fifth grade takes the test for math, reading, and science. We had a great week and I wanted to thank all the parents for sending in breakfast and snacks each day.

After testing each day we played some math games to review instead of doing test prep. One of the games we played was 5 to make 205. We used 2 10-sided dice and the kids used those to make a number. They could roll 5 times and couldn't go over 205.

We also played 13 Ways of Looking at Half. I had a sheet where the kids could color all the ways they saw half of the figure. Then we took turns coming to the Smartboard and filling in the answers. They came up with all but one answer!

Untitled

My students finally earned all of their brownie points so I made brownies for them. I'll be taking them to school tomorrow and I know they will be excited!

STUDENTS: We have 9 days of school left. Tell me one way you will use the 7 habits to end the year in a successful way.

Week 32- ACE presentation and Test Prep

Check out this video our ACE students made with Mrs. Thompson, their ACE teacher.

This week we went to the ACE room to see their video and the inventions they created. Brady and Brooks created a containment device for mold clean up.

Jon and Michael R. made a sprinkler to be able to water the entire yard by only having to move it just a few times. It also uses collected rainwater to cut down on your water bill.

Untitled

In math this week we did a lot of reviewing because state testing is next week!
Untitled

I gave each pair dice and they had to roll 4 numbers. Then they created fractions and added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided. The goal was to create a problem and have the largest answer.

STUDENTS: I know you guys are going to ROCK this test! We will be testing reading, math, and science. Which part do you know you will do best on and why?

Compare and Compute Fractions Game

I've had some emails asking about the fractions game our math coach, Mrs. James, played with my students a few weeks ago. I asked her and got permission to post the game sheet so you can use it if you'd like. Thank you Mrs. James!

Week 31- Volume

Untitled

This week we learned about volume. We started the week by using 24 cubes to see how many different rectangular prisms we could make. I also have a great resource for teaching volume that I found on teachers pay teacher: Teaching Volume Unit.

Untitled

I also had some students that learned how to play Flip 4, a new game we have.

Untitled

I went to a math workshop this week and found a few other new games I need to get!

Untitled

Here is one activity that was shared at the workshop.

We have been finishing up our study of the planets and the kids have really enjoyed working in groups to learn about the planets.

Week 30- Class photo and space

This week we got our class photo! Check us out.

We also had a cow come to visit us. They showed us how cows are milked and taught us a few things about cows.

This week we started to study about the planets. As you know, I love using music to teach and there are a lot of great songs about space!

The kids worked in groups to study their assigned planet.

Here are a few of the songs we have been using to learn about the planets.

Planet Around a Star Song

Earth's Orbit

There are many more songs to come in this unit! Here is one we listen to every day to help learn the states and capitals.

STUDENTS: We have been working on Habit 7: Sharpening the Saw. What are you doing this weekend to sharpen your saw? Make sure to write a 7 up sentence to earn your ticket.
